Terrestrial laser scanning for snow depth observations: An update on technical developments and applications
نویسنده
چکیده
In the past few years terrestrial laser scanning methodology has become a powerful tool for determining the spatial snow depth distribution on slopes. With technical improvements of devices, e.g. increased measurement range, reduced beam diameter, increased scanning speed and a more precise registration process, application for snow and avalanche related objectives has increased. The presentation focuses on one example, documentation of an avalanche hazard that destroyed a railway track. The mass balance of the avalanche was measured to allow reliable evaluation of dynamic modeling and risk analyses. Technical developments including improvements in applicability of the devices are described and continuing limitations of terrestrial laser scanning methodology are discussed. An outlook on future developments of the technology is also given.

The Application of Terrestrial Laser Scanning for Monitoring Natural Hazards
Terrestrial laser scanning is used as a helpful observation method in hazard assessment to collect 3D data from changing landscape surfaces, to obtain information about the current states of natural hazard processes. Three different applications of terrestrial laser scanning for monitoring natural hazard are presented to better understand the method of application, based on the outcome of previ...
متن کاملDesign of a scanning laser meter for monitoring the spatio-temporal evolution of snow depth and its application in the Alps and in Antarctica
Although both the temporal and spatial variations of the snow depth are usually of interest for numerous applications, available measurement techniques are either spaceoriented (e.g. terrestrial laser scans) or time-oriented (e.g. ultrasonic ranging probe). Because of snow heterogeneity, measuring depth in a single point is insufficient to provide accurate and representative estimates. We prese...
متن کاملPositioning of Avalanche Protection Measures Using Snow Depth Mapping via Terrestrial Laser Scanning
In recent years snow depth mapping via terrestrial laser scanning has become increasingly popular as a measurement method used for snow and avalanche research. Due to technological advancements, it is now possible to measure the spatial snow depth distribution on slopes over an area of 4 km2 in a horizontal resolution of 3 cm (at a distance of 100 m), with an accuracy of 5 cm. In this presentat...
متن کاملMeasuring Snow Depth with a Terrestrial Laser Ranging System
Knowledge on the spatial and temporal distribution of snow depth is one of the key parameter in the assessment of avalanche hazards, for snow drift and avalanche modelling and model verification. Reliable measurements of snow depth distribution are of interest for practitioners as well as for scientists. Most of the conventional methods like snow pits, probing or profiling deliver point informa...
متن کاملSatellite Remote Sensing of Snow Depth on Antarctic Sea Ice: An Inter-Comparison of Two Empirical Approaches
Snow on Antarctic sea ice plays a key role for sea ice physical processes and complicates retrieval of sea ice thickness using altimetry. Current methods of snow depth retrieval are based on satellite microwave radiometry, which perform best for dry, homogeneous snow packs on level sea ice. We introduce an alternative approach based on in-situ measurements of total (sea ice plus snow) freeboard...
